Only eight miles long, Folegandros is one of the smallest of the Cyclades Islands. This rocky outcrop is far from commercial with just three small communities and a small handful of tavernas, hotels and bars but opportunities for enjoying its natural beauty abound. The island’s largest town, Chora, is closed to motorized vehicles and offers stunning views of the Aegean. A lack of crowds make for an ideal diving destination with a certified dive center and clear waters for snorkeling and free diving.

Although there are no commercial airports on Folegandros, the island can be reached by ferries in around three hours from Santorini and Milos, or eight hours from Athens. Private helicopter transfers are also available.

Things to do:

  • Tour the coast on a local bus that circumnavigates the island

  • Dine a traditional taverna on the square in Chora

  • Visit Ano Meria, an agricultural settlement with orchards and farmland

  • Take in the views from the mountaintop church of Panagia
